The Attitude of Students and Teachers to AI: Cluster Analysis
Abstract
The article provides an overview of current research on the current state of generative artificial intelligence. The authors of the article conducted a cluster analysis of data obtained from a survey of 1,597 students and 250 professors at Tomsk State University. 3 clusters of teachers were identified: 1) Advanced users. For them, the use of generative AI is an opportunity to free up time for new tasks, to be in the trend of technology development, generative AI allows them to increase their competitive advantage. This cluster is more loyal to students' use of tools with AI. 2) A cluster of respondents with average and above average usage experience. They are interested in trying to use generative AI, but they do not notice the significant advantages of generative AI, and they are also less loyal to the use of generative AI by students. 3) A cluster of respondents with little or no use experience – the attitude is characterized by an existing interest in generative AI, as well as to the possibilities of reducing the complexity of tasks with its help, the least loyal to the use of generative AI by students. There are 4 behavioral types among the students: 1) A cluster of advanced users – a more loyal attitude to the capabilities of the generative AI, awareness of the need to work with the data obtained from the generative AI, awareness of the risk of increasing the incorrect use of the generative AI. 2) A cluster of respondents with above–average usage experience - a more trusting attitude to the information provided by the generative AI, allocation of more opportunities for its use, are more inclined to believe that the generative AI will not harm the quality of their education. 3) A cluster of respondents with average usage experience has an uncertain attitude towards generative AI, more often than others it is difficult to assess the positive and negative sides of generative AI. 4) A cluster of respondents with little use experience – more frequent use for extracurricular activities, generally positive attitude towards generative AI, see the risks associated with less attention of students to education.
