Special Issue of the Journal “Educational Studies Moscow”: “The Science of Reading: Bridging Neural and Cognitive Mechanisms with Educational Practice”

Dear colleagues!

We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Special Issue dedicated to advancing our understanding of the cognitive, neurobiological, and linguistic foundations of reading development and proficiency across the lifespan. This Special Issue aims to consolidate cutting-edge empirical and theoretical research that not only elucidates the underlying mechanisms of reading but also translates these insights into actionable implications for educators and educational systems.

We invite high-quality original research articles, methodological papers, and comprehensive reviews addressing the following core thematic areas:

  1. Neural mechanisms of reading (high-level meta-analyses or systematic reviews exploring the neurobiological basis of reading processes)
  2. Mechanisms of typical reading (empirical studies of cognitive and behavioral profiles of fluent reading)
  3. Reading mechanisms in neurodivergent children, adolescents, and adults (research focused on the mechanisms of atypical reading skill development – for example, in dyslexia, hyperlexia, including diverse cognitive profiles)
  4. Factors influencing the development of reading skills in typically developing people and people with various developmental disabilities (empirical studies and systematic reviews)
  5. Reading mechanisms in different languages ​​(experimental and review articles presenting a comparative analyses examining reading acquisition and processing across languages with varying orthographic depth, with different scripts, etc.)
  6. Mechanisms of reading in native and non-native languages ​​(including experimental studies of eye movements during reading)

 

Particularly welcome are papers that explicitly formulate clear, scientifically substantiated conclusions for the development of pedagogical strategies and systematic educational policy.

The issue will be published in English, and articles must be submitted in English. The editors are considering additional translations of this thematic issue into Russian.

Article length: 6,000 to 8,000 words.

Article submission deadline: November 15, 2026.

Publication of the thematic issue of the journal is planned for the second half of 2027.

Please note that the journal “Educational Studies” (https://vo.hse.ru/index) is a peer-reviewed periodical journal. It conducts double-blind peer review of all incoming manuscripts. Articles that comprise the upcoming thematic issue are no exception. Therefore, the submission of an article by an author does not automatically mean its acceptance or inclusion in the issue.
